When Darkness Comes, He Remains

You know that feeling when you drive home at night and the headlights only show you about a hundred feet of road? You can't see the turn. You can't see the destination. You just see the next little stretch of pavement. And somehow, that's enough to get you home. A lot of us are living in that kind of light right now. You don't need the whole map. You just need enough to take the next step. And that's exactly what God gives. Listen to the words of the shepherd king: Yahweh is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil. My cup runs over. Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in Yahweh's house forever. (Psalms 23:1-6) Here's the first thing. The Shepherd knows you in the valley. Notice something in that psalm. When David talks about green pastures, he says "he." He makes me. He leads me. He restores me. But the moment he steps into the dark, the language changes. for you are with me (Psalms 23:4). It stops being about God and starts being talk to God. The valley didn't push David away from the Lord. It pushed him into His face. So here's what I'd ask of you this week. Stop talking about God to your friends and start talking to Him. Even if it's three sentences in the car with the radio off. "Lord, I'm here. It's dark. I know You see me." That's a prayer. He hears it. Second thing. He equips you for the hard path. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me (Psalms 23:4). A shepherd carried two tools. The rod was a club for the wolves. The staff was a crook to pull a wandering sheep back to safety. One protects you from what's out there. The other protects you from yourself. And notice, David doesn't say the valley is removed. He says he's comforted in it. God's first answer to your darkness is usually not escape. It's company and equipment. So take up the tools He gave you. His Word is the rod: get in it daily, even a few verses. His people are the staff: let someone at church know you're struggling. Send that text. Sit in that pew. Sheep in the dark don't wander off alone. Third thing. His goodness follows you home. Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life (Psalms 23:6). All the days. Not the pleasant days. Not the days your health report comes back clean. All of them. And then, I will dwell in Yahweh's house forever (Psalms 23:6). The valley has an exit. The Father's house does not. Friend, this psalm is not wishful thinking. It's a promise purchased at a price. The Good Shepherd walked into the deepest valley there was, the cross, and He laid down His life for the sheep. He came out the other side. And if He carried you through that, He will carry you through this. So here's the application. Take the long view today. Write down one mercy from this week, however small, and thank God for it out loud. Train your eyes to see the goodness that's already following you. Here's my challenge. Don't ask God to explain the darkness. Ask Him to walk with you in it. He's already offered. Say yes. Let's pray. Father, some of us can't see the road tonight. Thank You that our Shepherd can. Be near to every heart that's aching. Give them the comfort of Your rod and Your staff, the company of Your people, and the sure hope of Your house. We ask it in the name of Jesus, our Good Shepherd.
